Certificate in Advanced English for Young Tourism Professionals is a programme that students can rely on to cover the complete range and depth of language and skills needed to communicate effectively and confidently especially in the tourism and hospitality industries.

This programme aims to develop the student's appropriate use of English in terms of accuracy, facility and fluency. It serves as a preparatory course designed to prepare non-English speakers for a successful entry into the undergraduate degree programs if they have not satisfied the English language requirement.

Learners are introduced to English grammar and vocabulary through the four core competencies in speaking, listening, writing and reading which are conceptualised within a thematic interactive approach framework and this forms the structure of the course as shown below:


After successful completion of this level, students will have a good grasp of academic English. Learners will be focusing on foundation building in vocabulary use in the tourism and hospitality industries.

With strong integration of critical analysis, students will be able to develop strategies to achieve higher learning. It serves as a preparatory course designed to prepare learners for a successful entry into the advanced level.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  2. read and interpret some authentic materials on familiar subjects
  3. understand the way English language is used varies according to context in intermediate level
  4. understand vocabulary use in the tourism and hospitality industries
  5. value that their language proficiency has an impact on their living and working environment
  6. demonstrate full confidence in their ability to communicate effectively in a variety of formal and informal contexts
  7. respond appropriately to oral interactions by using phrases and sentences in a range of situations
  8. examine the procedure for constructing a line graph / bar graph from a given set of data
  9. interpret information from line graphs / bar graphs presented in exercises
  10. demonstrate the ability to make an effective presentation in front of an audience
  11. demonstrate an awareness of the time needed to plan, research and write an essay
  12. apply the principles of effective essay development

Entry Requirement

For new student who has completed secondary school and a TMIS English Placement Test score of 46 – 70 marks.

Mode of Instruction

The lecture will be delivered in a classroom setting, experiential learning, etc.

Teaching and learning will be take place in the following modes:

  • Teaching from the textbooks
  • Readings from references in the textbooks and internet research
  • Participants’ discussions during classroom activity time
  • Participants’ studying and analyzing on written assignments on set questions
  • Participants’ oral presentations
  • Videos (movies)
  • Audio CDs (conversational, songs, etc.)
  • Interviews


Students are assessed through different modes of assessments including classroom participation, group or individual project work, oral communication assessment and final examination. Each mode of assessment carries different weightages.


Students will progress to the next level upon passing the Final Assessment of each level. On successful completion and passing of the Level 2 (Intermediate), the Certificate in Advanced English for Young Tourism Professionals Level 2 (Intermediate) will be awarded by TMIS.


  • Minimum C6 in GCE ‘N’ Level English or  WPL ES Locel 4
